The initial stage of treatment for periodontal disease is usually a thorough cleaning that may include scaling or root planing. The objective of these non-surgical procedures is to remove etiologic agents such as dental plaque, tartar, or calculus, which cause gingival inflammation and disease. Scaling and root planing can be used as a stand-alone treatment, or a preventative measure. There may be cases where the use of the laser may add significant benefit to conventional scaling and root planing, enhancing the debridement of the root surface of the teeth, reducing the soft tissue bacterial level, reduce pocket levels, create a new attachment, and in many instances reduce the amount of surgery needed.
